Canon USA approached Ori Media to become their creative team for their presence at Sundance 2020. I was brought on in the role of creative director for the event with support from the Ori Media team.

After reviewing their previous events at Sundance, we determined that we wanted to do something they had never done before. We wanted to be creative and bold and give their guests something to talk about.

Sundance was not doing a specific theme that year. Very minimalist brand that was open to interpretation. That minimalist design reminded me of the French New Wave of the 1960s. I dug into old titles and posters from the era and started designing a theme built around those aesthetics. Another large influence was the work Piet Mondrian which you’ll clearly recognize.

But what’s an event without a theme? Canon has always called it the “Canon Creative Studio”; an event that brings filmmakers together for movie discussions, networking, and to try the latest from the Canon EOS Cinema line of equipment. That experience reminded me of a common term in film: BTS (behind the scenes). This lead me to thinking that this event would take filmmakers not just behind but Beyond the Scenes. I’ll let the content speak from here:
